The biggest elephant in the room for most people who first get into aim training is when they learn of this new phrase “Mouse Control.” The first question that a person usually asks is “what is Mouse Control?” This is kind of a difficult question to answer, because the phrase itself has been muddied by misuse and misnomers. So, what is Mouse Control? It’s very simple. Mouse Control is defined by the words in the phrase itself. It is simply a catch-all term for the way you control your mouse.
What is the difference between mouse control and in-game aim? Easy! Mouse control is specifically the way we utilize our mouse, and our aim in a game is an expression of that skill with a combination of in-game factors. In-game factors range from things like movement, positioning, abilities in the game, and any mechanics that can have an influence on the reflection of our control of the mouse in-game.
How do you improve Mouse Control?
Improving mouse control is a crucial aspect of gaming, and it's not always a walk in the park. Simply practicing with an aim trainer won't necessarily boost your mouse control skills. It requires careful analysis and experimentation with your mouse usage. Progress can often come to a halt when we hit a plateau or wall, and our mouse agility doesn't magically improve over time. To enhance your mouse control, we must overcome these barriers that are typically gaps in our technique. Here are some fundamental tips to help you improve your mouse control and take your mouse control to the next level:
Grip your mouse with less tension
One of the most prevalent mistakes among aimers and players, both in-game and during training sessions, is the excessive use of tension. This overutilization of tension can have several negative effects on our aiming abilities. For instance, it can lead to shakiness in our aim, making it challenging to achieve precise shots even when we consciously try to make slight adjustments. Moreover, excessive tension can cause us to feel "locked up" while tracking targets, causing us to lose the smoothness and pace needed to maintain accurate aim. To excel in aiming, it is crucial to learn how to reduce unnecessary tension while maintaining the same level of control. Mastering the art of utilizing tension efficiently is a key factor in achieving success. By finding the right balance of tension, we can maintain stability in our aim without compromising our ability to make necessary adjustments. This allows for smoother and more fluid movements, which are vital in precise targeting and tracking. Through deliberate practice and mindfulness, we can gradually decrease excessive tension and develop a more relaxed and controlled approach to aiming. This will lead to improved aiming performance, consistency, and overall success in both gaming scenarios and aim training exercises. Aim with Intention
One of the most significant mistakes I often observe is players who fall into the trap of auto-piloting their aim. By this, I don't mean simply not thinking about their aim, but rather a lack of awareness regarding whether they are accurately aiming at their target before taking the shot. This manifests in inefficient and erratic movements during aiming, among other similar issues. To improve and become more proficient, it is crucial to consistently follow the fundamental steps involved in executing proper aiming techniques. In games like VALORANT, taking the time to make micro-adjustments onto a target is essential. Before firing, confirming that your crosshair is precisely on the target is a must. Rushing the aiming process leads to significant problems, and this is particularly common among players in lower ELOs (skill levels) of the game. To address this issue, focus on maintaining a high level of awareness during aiming. Be conscious of your movements, and strive for deliberate and purposeful adjustments to hit your targets accurately. Avoid getting caught up in a hasty firing rhythm, and instead, take the time needed to ensure your aim is on point before engaging. By consistently practicing these mindful aiming techniques, you can overcome this common obstacle and significantly improve your performance in VALORANT and other shooting games.
Move your mouse less
The advice may seem simple, but it is incredibly valuable: move your mouse less. It's surprising how often we overcompensate for our aim without even realizing it, which can be evidenced by reviewing our gameplay footage. This tendency is particularly noticeable when tracking fast-moving targets with short strafes. In such cases, we might be instructed to under track the target, but over time, this can become our default aiming approach. In actual gameplay, rushing and making frantic mouse movements can be detrimental, resulting in inefficient aiming and constant overcompensation. This, in turn, can adversely affect our overall mouse control abilities and hampers our accuracy. By moving your mouse less and aiming with intention, you can enhance your accuracy, minimize overcompensation, and improve your overall aiming performance both in training sessions and during real games. It's the small adjustments and attention to detail that can lead to significant improvements in your aim.
With these three tips you can unlock a lot of your abilities without ever touching an aim trainer, an aim trainer just lets you learn these lessons more harshly. These seem like very basic and meager tips but I believe that just learning these three things and practicing them into a habit will uncap your potential for growth, regardless of if you are aim training or just playing a game.
